About Us

Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is an independently operating branch of a rapidly expanding effort to bring rock n’ roll camps for girls all over the United States, Canada, and the world!

Mission

Girls Rock Philly is a volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women from the greater Philadelphia region through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

Targeted areas include: musical development, self-esteem enhancement, friendship & community building, and nurturing individual talents within a cooperative atmosphere. Additionally, girls benefit from physical & artistic activities that complement their music instruction.

Goals for the program include empowerment of girls & women though music and providing the opportunity for all definitions of girls & women to succeed in any venture, whether musical or otherwise. Girls of all backgrounds and levels of musicianship (including beginners!) are encouraged to apply, since a limited number of scholarships will be provided.

Girls Rock Philly formed in the fall of 2006 as part of an emerging group of like-minded nonprofits across the country and internationally, responding to a gap in music mentorship and development opportunities for pre-teen and teenage girls. We held our first camp in August of 2007 with 20 campers.

Girls Rock Philly grew exponentially in 2008, serving 50 campers, and August 2009’s camp also served 50 campers while expanding to include a professional studio recording opportunity with the first Girls Rock Philly camper band compilation album.

In 2010, Girls Rock Philly served 75 campers who benefitted from our refined volunteer training, expanded workshops and the compilation album recording, as well as a high-profile showcase at the Trocadero Theatre for 700 people in August.  We also expanded to include Ladies Rock Camp and moved into our current headquarters, including multiple, year-round practice spaces for campers and volunteers.
